Big Band Holidays at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Holiday celebrations have been de rigueur at Jazz at Lincoln Center since December 1989, when the Wynton Marsalis band and The Lincoln Center Classical Jazz Orchestra presented “A Classical Jazz Christmas.” The tradition continued over the years with various iterations of “Red Hot Holiday Stomp,” in which small ensembles put a New Orleans feeling on choice Yuletide classics. Carrying this ritual forward, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will present over a dozen imaginative arrangements of timeless holiday songs, joined by vocalists René Marie and Gregory Porter. Elizabeth Mitchell and You Are My Flower at Symphony Space
Saturday, December 15, 11 a.m.
Always one of the most anticipated shows of the Just Kidding season, Elizabeth Mitchell creates gentle, heartfelt music that transfixes audiences of all ages with homespun renditions of great songs by Woody Guthrie, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, The Velvet Underground, and more! The quiet sweetness and intimacy of her concerts cement her as a favorite artist whose music will be remembered for years to come. Mitchell’s 2012 release, Little Seed: Woody Guthrie Songs won Gold Awards from both Parents’ Choice and NAPPA, and a Platinum Award from the Oppenheim Toy Porfolio. The concert celebrates the release of a new Smithsonian Folkways Recordings CD called Blue Clouds. Symphony Space members will stay after the show for a special holiday cookie decorating event. Explore the world of acting, singing, and dancing in a special 1-day camp that focuses on core elements of Musical Theater and associated themes that includes theater games, comedic improv, and dramatic play. Uncle Rock’s Holiday show at Symphony Space

Join America’s favorite faux-relative for a performance filled with Beatles-esque hooks, Grimm’s Fairy Tales depth, and Woody Guthrie folksiness. The Three Bears Holiday Bash at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre
Through December 30, 2012
The Three Bears Holiday Bash, is a variety show that celebrates the holiday season in song, dance, and puppetry. This production quickly becomes a comedy of errors when Baby Bear invites Santa to star in Mama and Papa Bear’s annual holiday show. The audience also gets to join in on the fun with a “12 days of Christmas” sing-a-long during the performance! Drawing from the stories of Hanukkah, the Night Before Christmas, and Kwanzaa, The Three Bears Holiday Bash is a great way to get into the holiday spirit!

Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., with an additional 2:30 p.m. performance each Wednesday; Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Various performances and celebrations for Christmas, Hanukah, and Kwanza, including an Historic Holiday House Tour of Flushing historic sites, Shtreiml, A new look at some centuries old folk music, delivered by a high-octane mix of not-so-traditional Eastern-European Jewish and Turkish music, and a Kwanza Story Telling Workshop. Styling an American Family: The 1910s at The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms
Ongoing through January 6
This new exhibition featuring fashions from Syracuse University’s Sue Ann Genet Costume Collection is on display in the Log House at Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Farms. The exhibition allows visitors to view the human form in the home as it may have looked from 1911-13 when the Stickley family was in residence. Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., with tours are offered hourly. Kids Club THIRTEEN members receive 10% off in the gift shop.  More info.

Holiday Express at the DiMenna Children’s History Museum
Every day through January 6, 2013

Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden

Visions of Gingerbread: The Sweetest Architects at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center

See some creative confections, completely consisting of edible materials, from the area’s finest bakers, chefs and caterers at the Visions of Gingerbread: The Sweetest Architects IV exhibition. Returning favorites, along with new competitors, will show off their gingerbread skills. Visitors will be able to vote for their “Fan Favorite” at the Museum. Visit and vote for your favorite often, and check back to see who won. The artful architecture of the Gingerbread creations will be complemented by an amateur photography exhibition, WINTER SCENES: SIGHTS OF THE SEASON, by members of the Stamford Garden Club.
